Colloidal oatmeal

Colloidal oatmeal is one of the very few skincare ingredients with regulatory status as a skin protectant. What makes it work, and why it is in IKI’s moisturizer.

The short answer

Colloidal oatmeal is whole oat kernels milled to a fine powder that disperses in water. It contains beta-glucans that hold moisture, lipids that reinforce the barrier, and avenanthramides, polyphenols with documented anti-itch and anti-inflammatory activity. It is recognized by the FDA as an over-the-counter skin protectant, and it is one of the safest soothing ingredients for sensitive and eczema-prone skin. IKI uses it in Iro Emulsion Gel Moisturizer.

What colloidal oatmeal is

Oats have been used in baths for irritated skin since Roman times. Colloidal oatmeal is the modern version: the whole grain, including bran, milled to a particle size fine enough to stay suspended in water and spread evenly on skin. Since 2003 it has had an FDA monograph as a skin protectant, a status very few cosmetic ingredients hold.

What it does on the skin

  • Relieves itch. Avenanthramides, the oat's own antioxidant polyphenols, reduce histamine-driven itch and inflammation. This is the effect behind oatmeal baths for eczema and chickenpox.
  • Holds water. Oat beta-glucans form a film that slows water loss and gives the skin a comfortable, cushioned feel.
  • Reinforces the barrier. Oat lipids and proteins help restore the surface film of skin that has been over-cleansed or over-treated.
  • Buffers pH. It is mildly acidic, close to the skin's own pH.

What the evidence looks like

Colloidal oatmeal has clinical trials in atopic dermatitis and dry, itchy skin showing improvements in itch, dryness and barrier function within two to four weeks, and a very low rate of reactions even in allergy-prone groups. It is one of the ingredients we trust most for skin in the middle of a flare.

How IKI uses it

Iro Emulsion Gel Moisturizer combines colloidal oatmeal with Centella asiatica, niacinamide, squalane and multi-weight hyaluronic acid in a lightweight gel-emulsion. In its independent 30-day study on 49 people with sensitive skin, 100% said it felt gentle, 96% said their skin felt more moisturized and 90% said their skin felt calmed and soothed.

Questions about Colloidal oatmeal

Can I use colloidal oatmeal if I have a gluten sensitivity?

Usually yes. Oat allergy is different from gluten sensitivity and is rare. If you have a diagnosed oat allergy, avoid it; if in doubt, patch test.

Is colloidal oatmeal good for eczema-prone skin?

It is one of the best-supported cosmetic ingredients for itchy, eczema-prone skin. It does not replace prescribed treatment during a medical flare.

Is oat safe for babies and children?

Colloidal oatmeal is widely used in pediatric skincare. IKI products are formulated for adults; ask your pediatrician for children.
